About the department:
“There is no foot too small that it cannot leave an imprint on this world”
Paediatric Department has been functional as a part of district hospital before it became a part of Medical College (HIMS) in the year 2006. Currently the Department caters to more than 30,000 children aged less than 18 years every year in the Out-Patient Department. Services provided include daily OPD services, Immunization services, 24 hour neonatal and Paediatric emergency services, Early Intervention for disabilities (DEIC) and Nutrition Rehabilitation for children less than five years with malnutrition. With the start of HIMS teaching hospital in 2006, Paediatric and Neonatal intensive care services were upgraded to the level of tertiary care centre.
Department has constantly been developing into a tertiary referral centre over the years, and has expanded from 30 paediatric beds in 2006 to 120 paediatric beds currently. Neonatal intensive care unit started with 10 beds in 2006, was upgraded to 29 beds in 2012 and to 50 bedded level III referral centre in 2018. Currently the NICU provides services to both inborn as well as out-born neonates being referred from all parts of the district and also the neighbouring districts. Thanks to advancement in neonatal care and facilities available in the modern NICU, even premature babies that are born as early as 28weeks gestation have survived with good neuro-developmental outcome.
Well staffed District Early Intervention Centre (DEIC) and Nutritional Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) have been providing services on daily basis to all the children in need.
Since 2018, a separate dedicated Mother and Child wing has been established for Department of Paediatrics and Obstetrics & Gynaecology catering to more than 1,00,000 mothers and children every year. The Department is supported by well staffed blood bank and laboratory operational 24 hours.
Community Programmes like Breast Feeding week, Newborn Week, Diarrhoea control fortnight, Pulse Polio programmes, Children’s day celebrations etc are actively celebrated. Mothers and children are educated for continued care and betterment of the children.
With the start of Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences in 2006, Department has been actively involved in academic activities for under graduate students. With a good number of patients with various ailments visiting the hospital for care from all parts of the district, there is a good opportunity for the medical students to learn through experience. Department has good infrastructure and well experienced faculty. The faculty who are always ready to teach and learn, have actively involved themselves in various teaching activities apart from the regular theory classes and clinical postings.
As a Jewel on the Crown Post graduate programme was started in the Department from the year 2020-2021. Even in the tough times Covid-19, the residents are constantly kept involved in the teaching activities. Community based programmes get the residents involve in the patient care building patient communication skills in them. Well equipped neonatal ICUs give an opportunity for the resident doctors to learn by seeing and doing. Various research activities keep the residents involved and orient them to innovation.
This year, with the emergence of covid pandemic, a dedicated paediatric facility has been established to cater to the needs of the children in the district. The facility includes paediatric as well as neonatal ICU setup equipped with modern mechanical ventilators and other facilities.
Highlights:
Manages all childhood illnesses
